The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) generally applies to a “qualified motor vehicle” used, designed, or maintained to transport goods and that travels in two or more IFTA member jurisdictions, and meets at least one of these: has two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 lbs, has three or more axles regardless of weight, or is used in combination with a total weight exceeding 26,000 lbs.
Many 26-foot box trucks fall right at or above that 26,000 lb threshold depending on configuration, so it’s worth checking your specific GVWR rather than assuming. If a vehicle doesn’t meet the qualified-motor-vehicle definition, IFTA generally does not apply, though state-specific fuel tax rules can still apply for intrastate operations.
Confirm your vehicle’s exact GVWR and consult your base-jurisdiction IFTA office for a determination specific to your equipment.
